Stanford and Notre Dame Preview

The Stanford Cardinal and Notre Dame Fighting Irish have had a rivalry in the modern era since 1988, meeting every year except 1995 and 1996. At the time, Notre Dame holds an 18-12 record in the series.

In 2022, Notre Dame is looking to pick up its fourth straight win after starting 0-2 and moving up to 4-2 this year. Stanford, on the other hand, is struggling a bit this year with a 1-4 start. Notre Dame won over two touchdowns.

At his pre-match press conference, Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman praised his team for bouncing back from two losses.

“There was a bit of, ‘Is this plan, what we’re doing going to work?’ because you didn’t get the results you wanted,” Freeman said, starting with two losses. “I think what you see when you lose two games and you lose to Marshall, I think the kids are desperate to change and they’re like, ‘Coach, what do we need to win?’ And I told them that we should really focus on our preparation and our plan, and not just focus on the outcome of the game. I think the kids now believe in what we do as a coaching staff and what we implement and teach them. The results show them that they can trust us and that the plan is working.”

Freeman also said that Stanford is a better team than their track record shows and they can’t help but notice.

“Ahead this week, it’s a game of rivalry,” Freeman said. “We’re going to have a motivated Stanford team, which is really if you’re watching the movie and I haven’t watched as much as I need to and I will, we’re back at 6am Sunday morning but I know I’m just watching this Oregon State game, they should have won that game,” Freeman said.

He continued, “It will be a talented football team that will come here and give a huge challenge to our football team. Like I said to the guys, enjoy the win day and move on. Today we will train. We didn’t train yesterday due to our late arrival. But today we will meet, put an end to the BYU game, and prepare for Stanford.”

Stanford vs. Notre Dame starts Saturday, October 15 at 7:30 pm ET on NBC and Peacock.
