The Crimson Tide are hoping to keep alive their chances of making a third straight berth in the College Football Playoff — aspirations that were nearly derailed twice already this season against Texas and Texas A&M. Alabama — which dropped two spots to No. 3 in the nation following its 24-20 win over the Aggies — may also be without defending Heisman Trophy winner Bryce Young at quarterback.
Speaking of the Heisman, Tennessee's quarterback Hendon Hooker is already among the favorites for the award, leading the Volunteers to a 5-0 start with wins over ranked opponents in Pitt and Florida. A win on Saturday would be the Volunteers' first in this rivalry since 2006, the year before Nick Saban joined Alabama.
Moreover, a victory would mark the team's first 6-0 start since 1998, a season in which Tennessee won its last national championship in the inaugural season of the BCS. A win vs. Alabama — which has six championships under Saban since 2009 — will doubtless ramp up talks of a national championship.
